The royal moat and city wall of Hanthawady ancient city are being repaired and maintained in the Bago area so that people can study the old historical treasures.
In Hanthawady ancient city, which was founded by King Bayint Naung around 470 years ago, the city wall, palace, and royal moat must be excavated and maintained for deterioration and people living in consecutive ages.
Director (Bago Branch), Department of Archaeology and National Museum, Myint Zaw said “The moat of Hanthawady ancient city has been excavated and maintained by the Bago Region Government from the 2018-2019 budget year.
The historic city wall is rectangular in design, measuring approximately 1.5 miles north to south and 1.3 miles east to west. To ensure the city’s protection and safety, the royal moat is erected around the city wall.”
The royal moat of Hanthawady old city is about 30,000 feet long, according to the official. Water moats, mud moats, and dry moats were the three types of moats. The purpose of the water moat was to protect the city from enemy attacks while also obtaining water.
“We already managed to excavate around 9,700 feet and so, we concluded 30 percent of the digging procedure,” Myint Zaw, Director (Bago Branch), Department of Archaeology and National Museum, stated. We have already dug and maintained roughly 1,300 feet of the city wall, completing about 4% of the responsibilities. To avoid degradation, we keep up with maintenance.
The royal moat is 210 feet long, 22 feet broad, and 76 feet deep from the city wall. We started clearing up hyacinths, debris, and waste there in the 2018-2019 fiscal year and have been maintaining normalcy ever since.”
The preservation process is being carried out in Hanthawady historic city in order to provide leisure, a tourist destination, and a source of pride for the people through monitoring ancient cultural heritages.
